The Costières area

Générac is located in an area called the Costières, this area offers many high points in the Camargue and gives some wonderful views to the west over the meadowlands  and south to the lagoons (Charnier and Scamandre). The soil in the Costières area is covered in rolled stones and is the perfect terrain for vines and orchards.

Festive seasons

When is party time, villages of the area set up their « provençal » market with their delicious« produits du terroir » on the middle of the streets.

But because  it’s also the land of Camarguaise bulls and horses, the Camarguaise  tradition animates the  villages’streets, and in the summer time it’s very common to see bulls and horses running in the streets of the villages: so beware of the bulls! (taureaux)!!!

Camarguaise tradition and…vocabulary!

Camargue symbole is the camarguaise cross, it represents faith, charity and hope.

Gardian  is the« cow-boy » of the Camargue, on top of his horse he’s looking after the wild bulls.

Abrivado (down to the arena): Few bulls, surrounded by gardians on horses are taken from the field to the arena through the village streets. Then people try to make them escape by creating  breaches in the gardian chain.

Course Camarguaise: In the arena, men in white ( les raseteurs)  defy the bull by trying to retreive from them, the rosette, tassels and string attached to their forehead and around their horn.

Bandido (back to the field) : After the Course camarguaise, the bulls go back to the field  surrounded by gardians on horses.

Encierro: In the village square or streets, bulls are released and people run around them!

Manade : Bulls or horses cattle.

Ferrade:  Marking with a red-hot iron the foal and veal
